CHALLENGE TRUST

The One Fly Challenge Trust has been formed to raise and manage funds for an educational scholarship aimed at broadening salmonid research expertise in New Zealand.

The One Fly Challenge Trust in association with One Fly New Zealand Ltd is pleased to welcome The Cawthron Institute as a formal working partner of the Trust.

Mr Rowan Strickland, Freshwater Group Manager of the Cawthron Institute has been recently appointed to the Board of Trustees.

In a statement to the Board, Rowan Strickland said

“The reason for The Cawthron’s involvement in the scholarship is that for the past 10 years we have deliberately grown our salmonid research capability (in fact we are the only research provider that has). It is therefore in our interest to invest in human capital development in this research area. Cawthron is very pleased to have found a partner in the One Fly Challenge Trust with similar aspirations”.

Dr John Hayes, Cawthron Scientist and Author of “The Artful Science of Trout Fishing” recently reported

“Information shortcomings on salmonid fisheries are apparent in resource consent and environment court hearings. The power generation crisis and intensification of agriculture are placing unprecedented environmental pressures on these fisheries; our lowland fisheries are declining as a result. This comes at a time when government has decreased its investment in salmonid research”.

The Board of The One Fly Challenge Trust recognises the need for good science and protection for New Zealand’s special salmonid fishery, unequivocally recognised as one of the best wild salmonid fisheries in the world.
Providing a scholarship in salmonid research is the first step towards increasing public knowledge of the fishery and bridging the information gap demanded by lawmakers and resource managers.

New Zealand is desperately short of suitably qualified young academics that are prepared to dedicate their professional life and skill to improving and maintaining the salmonid resource of our Lakes and Rivers, which plays such an important part in our nation’s history, economy and lifestyle.

The Board is charged with raising a significant amount of capital annually.
We look forward to your support so that the One Fly Challenge Trust can embark on this valuable mission.

The Silent Auction raised $1,100.00 for our ongoing scholarship funding programme

We are pleased to inform you of the sponsorship detailed in the following letter from the Cawthron Institute.
It is the Board's ambition to raise additional funds to sponsor sililar projects and would apreciate your support.
