RULES
Teams
- A team consists of two anglers.
- South Island professional guides are not eligible to enter.
- Each pair of anglers will have an assigned guide, selected by random draw.
Equipment/Tackle
- Anglers will supply their own equipment.
- Rod, reel and line are the angler’s preference.
- The use of dressings, lead weight and strike indicators are the anglers choice.
- In the interests of safety and comfort, we recommend quality wading boots – felt soles are not allowed.
The ‘One Fly’
- Any conventional fly pattern may be used, i.e. dry, wet, streamer, nymph or convertible.
Egg patterns and Glo Bugs are not allowed
- Anglers must choose the individual fly to be used at the start of the days fishing when he/she reaches the river. A different fly or pattern can be used for the two following days of fishing.
- The guide must approve flies before each angler starts fishing.
- Repair of the fly in use may be done with glues or adhesives. Retying the fly is prohibited. Hooks may be sharpened at any time.
- No lead head jigs or modified spinning lures will be allowed.
Fishing Procedure
- Rules and Regulations of the Nelson/Marlborough Fish & Game Council must be obeyed and anglers will be briefed the evening prior to fishing.
- Fishing times will be for any 6 hours of fishing, finishing at 5pm at the latest. Guides will be timekeepers.
- Guides may assist in netting the fish if the angler so requests.
- If the angler’s fly becomes caught in a snag, the angler or the guide may recover the fly and continue to fish. Extreme caution should be observed while wading.
- All scoring ends when the angler’s fly is irretrievably lost. The angler may continue to fish for fun and assist his/her partner for the remainder of the day.
- All fishing will be from the bank or wading.
Scoring
- All trout or salmon in excess of 25cm will be counted in the scoring.
- Guides will measure and record the length of each fish.
- Points will be awarded for each centimetre of the length of the fish.
- Guides are the official on stream judges and represent the organisers.
- The final total score will be the cumulative points for each angler over the three days, which determines team places.
- 30 points will be awarded to each angler who retains his/her ‘one fly’ for each of the 6 hour fishing periods.
- This is a catch and release event – there are no exceptions.
- Any trout that is killed or mortally wounded by poor sportsmanship or intention ( in the judgement of the guide ) will have the points which would have been scored by that fish deducted from that day’s fishing.
This is a sport-fishing event, where commonsense and good manners should prevail.
Other river users and land owners must be afforded the courtesy they deserve.
Jagging or intentional foul hooking of any fish will result in expulsion from the event.
